6 Budget friendly things to do in Brussels

After my quick visit to Paris I hopped on a train towards Brussels, Belgium. As Europe can be very expensive, especially if you’re earning South African rand. So I decided I’d make my next blog on free and reasonably priced things to do in Brussels. As we basically only spent 1 day here, these things can all be done in one day.

  1. Street food

Belgian Waffels

The street food and takeaways are very reasonable and the best way to enjoy the real Belgium waffle.

2. Visit the Grand-Place

Grand Place Brussels

No visit to Brussels is complete without a visit to the Grand-Place. With a collection of Gothic, baroque and Louis XIV style architecture, some of which host museums, restaurants, the town hall and the King’s house, this is the place to be. This is the best spot to enjoy your waffles and just take in the sheer beauty of the square and its history.

3. Belgium beer

Belgian Pale Ale

No trip to Belgium is complete without savoring it’s famous beers. In some restaurants the beer is cheaper than water, so take the beer. It’s great.

4. Manneken Pis

Manneken pis

Brussels is famous for the Manneken Pis, meaning “lil’ Piddler” in Dutch. It’s just one of those things you have to snap a photo of when in the capital city of Belgium, but honestly is a bit overrated. It is totally free to visit, but that is only if you don’t mind elbowing through the tourists to snap a pic of the 3 foot bronze boy.

5. Markets

Belgian markets

If bargain shopping is your thing and you’re a sucker for a market, like me, then don’t miss out on one of the many markets you will find around the city on weekends. These are the best places to find a cheap second hand book for the rest of your travels. You might even find a very special antique or two.

6. Street art

Tin Tin

I always feel the best way to get to know a place is just by walking it’s streets and street art is always something that speaks of the character of a place and it’s people. Brussels certainly has a lot of character. The street art is truly amazing and worth looking out for.
